B+E Trailer Test Training

Our B+E test trailer towing courses are available in most parts of the UK, with training tailored to each driver to keep your costs to a minimum. Choose from single day courses for experienced drivers, or multiple day courses that include the test to get your drivers working productively for you as quickly as possible.

Who are the courses for?

• Drivers who need to pass the B+E test, in order to tow trailers weighing more than 750 kgs when laden.
• Drivers who hold the relevant licence entitlement, yet want to increase their skill, safety and confidence.

Entitlement to tow

• If you passed your car test before January 1st 1997, you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass).  MAM is the maximum permitted laden weight.
• If you passed your car test after 1st January 1997 (including re-tests if you had your licence revoked), you are restricted to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM towing a trailer up to 750 kgs MAM, or a vehicle trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.  If you wish to tow a trailer that exceeds these weight limits, you will need to pass an additional driving test to gain B+E licence entitlement.

The B+E car and trailer driving test

• The car and trailer test lasts for approximately 1 hour and is based on the LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) test, requiring a significantly higher level of skill than that needed to gain a normal car licence. 
• The test comprises elements at the test centre and on the public road:
• Ability to complete thorough safety checks on your vehicle and trailer
• A precise and challenging reversing exercise
• An emergency braking exercise
• A comprehensive road drive; demonstrating advanced observation, use of speed and management of space to LGV test standards
• Unhitching and recoupling, using correct procedures throughout

Our Courses

• Without proper training, many people fail the B+E trailer test on the standard of their road driving, so all trainers are DSA Approved Driving Instructors with a nationally recognised diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction.  Friendly and professional, we are also extremely patient and believe that learning should be fun.
• Irrespective of your previous towing experience, we will prepare you not just for the test (if you need to take it) but to tow with skill, confidence and safety. 
• Reversing and manoeuvring training usually takes place on private ground.
• Intensive courses lasting 1, 2 or 3 days per driver are available, with the 2 and 3 day courses including the DSA B+E trailer test on the final afternoon.
• The training format for these courses is usually one-to-one, though sometimes it can be appropriate for you to add a second driver if desired.
• All training is conducted using your own vehicle and trailer, both for your driver's comfort and utmost relevance to your business. 
• We come to you for the training to make it all as easy as possible for you.
